To Fan or Not

One of the questions I was asked during the C-ville Design House (and there were many!) is if it is still in vogue to use ceiling fans. The short answer is yes! The long answer is it depends on the type and function of the fan.

Ceiling fans are a practical means of creating airflow on a warm day. However,  the ceiling fans with lights that are often used in new homes and known as "builder's grade", are generally considered unaesthetically pleasing and outdated for design purposes.

This doesn't mean that you should never use a ceiling fan with a light, but that the ceiling fan should generally not be your only lighting source (you should always have multiple lighting sources in a room anyway).

Here is a website, Fanimation, ( with some great looking fans. Additionally, there are several retailers in Charlottesville that carry Fanimation products including two lovely vendors, Timberlake Lighting ( ) and Ferguson Lighting (, who were both gracious enough to lend product to designers for this year's Design House.

Let's take a tour at some good fan choices for an updated look!

Great for a transitional look (transitional means traditional with a twist of contemporary).

Another great transitional look! Traditional farmhouse porch with stainless steel fans.
A great contemporary look!
Wood blades are a great look for a rustic cabin!
Unique industrial looking fan for a gym! Can be used elsewhere too!
Yes, white fans are still fashionable! Another Design House question.
A nice contrast to the white ceiling and picks up on the wood tones throughout the room.
This white fan is perfect for this elegant bedroom.
Love this textured fan on a porch! And Looks great with the texture of the wicker chair.
Great texture to this fan and it coordinates with the tone of the wood bookcases.
It also has an Asian feel to  pickup on the look of the matching ottomans.
Unique shape to this fan looks great with the wood flooring and the curve of wicker chairs.
Another great contemporary room with a good looking fan.
A great looking white fan compliments the softness of this contemporary room.

Hope this helps! Stay cool!

Until next time...
